Health Insurance

It is each student's responsibility to have a sufficient medical, accident or personal liability and possessions insurance valid for Czechia, before they leave their home country. The Faculty of Philosophy and Science is not responsible for any costs stemming from missing or insufficient insurance.

EU citizens

EU citizens (as well as citizens of Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland) who have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or UK citizens holding a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) are entitled to use it for urgent health care in Czechia free of charge. The students shall register their EHIC/GHIC within any insurance company operating in Czechia upon their arrival. Such registration is also free of charge. It is also highly recommended to have a supplementary travel health insurance. The students shall contract such insurance in their home country before their arrival in Czechia.

Non-EU citizens

Effective from 2 August 2021, the Act on the Residence of Foreign Nationals (hereinafter "Act") imposes an obligation on foreign nationals entering Czechia and staying in its territory for more than 90 days to take out travel medical insurance covering comprehensive health care within 90 days of entering Czechia. This obligation does not apply to foreign nationals covered by the Czech public health insurance scheme, or whose health care is covered under an international agreement, or who hold a valid EHIC and GHIC health insurance card*. For the coming five years from the law amendment's effectiveness, travel medical insurance covering comprehensive health care as required by the Act may be taken out exclusively with Pojišťovna VZP, a.s.

An overview of changes to the Act with effect from 2 August 2021 is published on the website of the Czech Ministry of Interior.

* As a result of International Treaty on Cooperation in the Area of Health and Social Security, medical travel insurance is not required from citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Cuba, Japan, Macedonia, Montenegro, Turkey and Serbia. The same exception applies to participants of the Erasmus+ program, Fulbright scholarship program, European Voluntary Service of the EC Youth in Action program, as well as holders of EHIC or GHIC. The students shall register their EHIC/GHIC or special forms (in case of international agreements) within any insurance company operating in Czechia upon their arrival. Such registration is free of charge. It is also highly recommended to have a supplementary travel health insurance. The students shall contract such insurance in their home country before their arrival in Czechia.

COVID-19 Information

In response to the Czech Ministry of Health Protective Measure, non-EU students arriving in Czechia after July 1, 2020 are obliged to arrange a sufficient health insurance covering medical care related to COVID-19 disease prior to their arrival.

Foreigners who have a long term residence in Czechia for more than 90 days pursuant to the Act on the Residence of Foreign Nationals and who are not insured within the public health insurance system of Czechia or another EU-member state can be vaccinated in Czechia by COMIRNATY vaccine (manufactured by Pfizer/BioNTech) provided that they:

  • have a valid long-term or permanent residency permit in Czechia,
  • hold a valid long-term visa,
  • are EU citizens with confirmation of temporary residency or a permanent residency permit in Czechia,
  • are family members of EU citizens with confirmation of temporary residency or a permanent residency permit in Czechia.
