Condition of admission:

  • proper completion of a photography-oriented master´s degree at a university (MgA.)
  • submission of a professional CV, summary of publications,
  • submission of a set of photographs and a theoretical thesis on the history of photography or on the theory of photography in the scope of practical and theoretical theses at the ICP SU FPS,
  • a PhD project that includes the topic of the dissertation, a basic list of literature and methodological background.

Study objectives:

The study is intended primarily for those graduates of master's degree programmes in photography who wish to teach photography or the history and theory of photography at various secondary and higher education institutions or who wish to increase their professional qualifications in curatorial, research, journalistic or organisational activities in the field of photography in museums, galleries, archives, publishing houses, professional journals, etc. The aim of the study is to provide a broad overview and practical skills of highly qualified professionals in the field of photography, history and theory of photography, photographic education and photographic museum and gallery work.

Study period:

The standard period of study is three years, with a maximum of seven years (counting the time from enrolment to the defence of the dissertation). In justified cases, the Dean may interrupt the study for a maximum of 24 months, with the recommendation of the supervisor.

Graduate profile:

The basic exit expertise is high quality authorial free creation, professional knowledge of photographic techniques, computer and pre-press editing of photographs, excellent overview of the history and present of photography and fine arts, ability to obtain, sort and professionally process materials for the theoretical part of the dissertation, orientation in the basics of psychology and sociology applicable in pedagogical practice, good orientation in museum and gallery practice and the photography market, knowledge of curatorial preparation of exhibitions. The ability to communicate in English and another world language is also important. Exit expertise is in the following areas:

  • own free creation,
  • pedagogical activities,
  • curatorial activity,
  • theoretical knowledge of the history of photography,
  • professional publications.

Graduates of the doctoral programme are well prepared for both professional photographic work and for professional research in the field of the history of photography as well as for the informed processing of the acquired materials.
