Admission conditions:

  • Completion of higher education studies at the master´s (postgraduate) level, preferably in the field of education Historical Sciences or a related humanities study programme,
  • successful completion of an oral entrance examination consisting of demonstration of factual knowledge in the field of history with a focus on Czech and Czecholovak history, including methodological and theoretical issueas in historical science,
  • presentation of a high-quality dissertation project.

Objectives of the study:

The aim of the study programme is to provide a university education corresponding to the composition of courses in the curriculum. The study programme provides education in the field of History, with a focus on Czech and Czechoslovak history. The doctoral study programme is aimed at developing independent scientific and creative activity in the field of education in Historical Sciences with a focus on Czech and Czechoslovak history in the Central European context. The doctoral study is a post-gradual degree for master's (follow-up) study programmes in the field of Historical Science and serves to increase the qualification of staff working at universities in museums, archives, heritage institutes and other memory institutions. It is intended for graduates of philosophical or pedagogical faculties, or other faculties of humanities, i.e. graduates of historical and related fields of study and programmes, primarily in the field of Historical Science education. The study programme responds to the persistent need to ensure a larger number of especially younger staff with higher qualifications in the above-mentioned field.

Study period:

The standard period of study is three years, with a maximum of seven years (counting the time from enrolment to the defence of the dissertation). It will be possible to request a staggered year once during the course of study, subject to the approval of the supervisor. In justified cases, the Dean, on the recommendation of the supervisor, may authorise an interruption of studies for a maximum of 4 semesters. The period of interruption does not count towards the length of the degree.

Graduate profile:

The output knowledge and skills of the graduate correspond to the structure of the study plan, the content of individual study courses, the requirements for the state final examination and the defence of the dissertation. Graduates are proficient in historical factual studies with a focus on Czech and Czechoslovak history in the Central European context. Graduates are capable of independent scientific and professional creative activity in the field of history with a focus on Czech and Czechoslovak history, perceived in the Central European context, at a theoretical and methodological level appropriate to the doctoral type of study programme. Graduates are able to reflect on foreign historiography and creatively apply, develop and verify its theses. Graduates are able to find employment in universities, academic institutions, professional and management positions in archives, museums and other memory institutions. Within their specialisation, they demonstrate the ability to contribute to current professional debates in the field during their studies and at the end of their studies.
