On June 24, 2024, the academic year 2023/2024 for the University of the Third Age was ceremonially concluded in the Big Hall of the School of Business Administration. To the sound of ceremonial fanfares, attendees entered accompanied by their family members and loved ones. Following them were representatives of the university and faculty management, academic staff, and other guests, who attended the formal presentation of certificates for the successful completion of lecture cycles and educational courses of the University of the Third Age.

The Silesian University was represented at the ceremonial event by the Vice-Rector for Science and International Relations, Professor Daniel Stavárek. Following the conclusion of the national anthem, the Dean of the School of Business Administration, Associate Professor Roman Šperka, took the floor as is traditional. In relation to the ceremonial conclusion of the academic year, he reflected on its course and outlined what attendees can look forward to in the upcoming academic year 2024/2025.

During the past academic year, the popular two-year study program "Our Society in the Whirl of European Integration" was completed. Participants gained insights into the structure, functioning, mission, and challenges of the European Union, as well as the position of the Czech Republic in the contemporary world. Another study group focused on crisis communication and critical thinking, and there was significant interest in the one-semester course "Etiquette for Every Occasion."

With high participation, students continued their education in English language courses. At their request, the faculty administration decided to organize a specialized excursion to London in September. The Department of Tourism and Leisure Activities took care of the seniors' healthy lifestyle through the "Movement Hygiene and Healthy Exercise" course.

In the academic year 2023/2024, a total of 203 students successfully met the conditions for completing the lecture cycles and educational courses. Notably, those who received certificates for completing the two-year programs deserve special recognition. These students not only regularly attended classes but also successfully passed all final tests.

Lifelong Education Coordinator, Mgr. Dagmar Sohrová, emphasized that the number of U3V students at SBA is relatively low given the population of Karviná and surrounding towns. This situation is a consequence of the region's historical, economic, and social development. However, SBA has turned this into an advantage—smaller study groups allow for closer contact with lecturers and peers, leading to better learning outcomes and deeper interpersonal relationships.

For their academic efforts, seniors are rewarded with specialized excursions, during which they have visited dozens of places in the Czech Republic and abroad. Financial contributions for studies are provided by the cities of Karviná, Orlová, and the municipalities of Petrovice u Karviné, Dětmarovice, Rychvald, and Albrechtice.

After the certificates were awarded to individual students, the closing speech was delivered by graduate representative Mikuláš Guráň. The ceremonial event concluded with a vocal performance by SBA student Barbora Larischová.

We wish our graduates a wonderful and well-deserved summer break and look forward to seeing them in the 2024/2025 academic year.
