STARS EU in 2024: The European University Project and Other Results

In November 2023, the prestigious four-year European University project, which the STARS EU alliance won in intense competition, officially started. The European Commission appreciated the quality of the project and the cooperation within the alliance and provided STARS EU with a grant of 12.4 million euros. The Silesian University in Opava (SU), which joined the alliance at the end of 2021 as the fifth of the current nine partner universities, has been carefully preparing for the project and has been involved since the beginning of 2024 with a total of 32 employees. The School of Business Administration (SBA) has the largest representation with its 14 employees, followed by the Rectorate, the Faculty of Philosophy and Science, the Faculty of Public Policies, and the Institute of Physics. Other colleagues from SU are involved in different working groups or activities of the alliance. The project at SU began with an introductory meeting of members, who met on January 11 to introduce their roles to each other and discuss the content and organizational structure of the project.

Discovery of chords sounds emitted by black holes in the Universe

Opava´s astrophysicists have made a fascinating discovery during their long-term research on black holes. They found that gravitational waves emitted from the vicinity of black holes, or during the merger of two compact celestial bodies, are accompanied by undulations that resemble the chords of musical instruments. The properties of these "chords" will allow physicists not only to better determine the parameters of the objects generating these waves but also to predict potential threats to humanity from space.
