On Wednesday 19 June, the Silesian University (SU) welcomed a rare visitor. At the invitation of the Rector of SU doc. Mgr. Tomáš Gongol, Ph.D., a delegation from the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, the most important scientific institution in the Czech Republic, headed by its President Eva Zažímalová, visited Opava, Jan Vondráček, member of the Academic Council of the CAS responsible for cooperation with universities and Michal Bursa, Director of the Institute of Astronomy of the CAS.

A working meeting, held in the Rector's Office meeting room, may significantly expand the existing cooperation between the staff of our university and the institutes of the Academy of Sciences or create a completely new collaboration.

At the morning meeting with the SU management, the guests watched a short presentation of the SU and all its components. They started a discussion in which the President presented the possibilities of cooperation offered by the Academy of Sciences. She emphasized that the research carried out at its 54 scientific institutes covers a wide range of scientific disciplines from highly specialized to multidisciplinary, crossing the boundaries of individual scientific fields.

After lunch, the guests visited Brain Fitness on Beethoven Street, a unique project of the Mathematical Institute. A sundial is newly installed on the building of this brain gym, which was officially put into operation on the occasion of the visit of the members of the Academy of Sciences in Opava. The unveiling ceremony was held by the President Eva Zažímalová together with the Rector of SU Tomáš Gongol.

The day-long visit of representatives of the Academy of Sciences to the SU then continued with an afternoon meeting with representatives of all SU units. The President reiterated the broad offer of cooperation between the Academy of Sciences and the SU and, in this context, she recalled the Strategy AV 21, under which the research programs of the CAS are open, among other things, to partners from universities. She did not forget to mention the students of doctoral study programs, of which there are approximately 2,000 at the CAS and for whom the CAS allocates half a billion crowns from its budget each year.

"The basis of successful partnerships are personal contacts of colleagues," noted Michal Bursa. "This is certainly the right way to go because first of all our country needs quality science," emphasized Miroslav Engliš, Director of the Mathematical Institute. Finally, Pavel Baran emphasized the great potential of the Moravian-Silesian Region and the opportunities for cross-border cooperation with universities in Poland.

Rector of SU doc. Gongol thanked all participants for the discussion and said: "It is up to us to analyze all the opportunities offered, first through the departmental group for science and foreign relations."

After the meeting at the Rector's Office, the guests from the Academy of Sciences toured other facilities at the SU's disposal. The visit continued to the building of the Faculty of Philosophy and Science on Hauerova Street, where the delegation met with the Institute of Creative Photopraphy staff, Vladimír Birgus and Jindřich Štreit, and had the opportunity to see a photo exhibition. Finally, the guests visited the Institute of Physics on Bezručova Square and its Unisphere, a space, where they could virtually explore the universe, the underwater world, or other interesting places of our planet through the latest technologies and experience the atmosphere of the observatory right in the city center.
