The Institute of Foreign Languages consists of three departments: the Department of English and American Studies, the Department of German Studies, and the Department of Italian and Latin Studies. The structure of the institute falls further into departmental libraries, the audio-visual centre, and the computer lab.

Research activity within the Institute of Foreign Languages is conducted by the staff. With the current composition of university professors, docents, and lecturers with candidatures of science, research is of high quality and is entirely focused on language study and language acquisition. Specialised focus is proportionally divided between, on one hand, diachronic (historical) and synchronic views which are in accordance with the theories of the Prague Linguistic Circle, and on the other hand, structural and functional explorations of language on the whole. The staff members of the Institute of Foreign Languages are qualified teachers of English, German, Latin and Italian, and also of a number of other Germanic, Romance, and Slavic languages.

Such a diversity of available languages within the Departments creates an ideal situation for linguistic comparison; that is, development of comparative linguistics. For future students, this means they can hope to achieve not only a practical perfection in a particular language with a comprehensive understanding of trends in research, but also, if they are interested, a real scientific schooling in modern linguistic study. The institute maintains close research contacts with the following institutions abroad: Prešov University (Slovakia), IDS Mannheim (Germany), Universität Würzburg (Germany), TU Dresden (Germany), and Keppler Universität Linz (Austria).
