Studium

HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITY

It is the only university in the Czech Republic which originated after 1989 from scratch, without any links with an institution which could have been considered to be its predecessor. The establishment of the Silesian University in Opava is connected with the overall democratic development, which started at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s of the last century, when further possibilities arose for development of remote regions after the removal of the hitherto state centralism, the regions, which refer to the Czech part of the historical Silesia.

Silesian University drew on people’s tremendous enthusiasm and the rich cultural-historical and pedagogical traditions of Silesia, an area with which it claims to be connected in its name and in which it aims to sustain education, progress, science and humanity.

The establishment of the Silesian University in Opava had been discussed several times since the second half of the 19th century and also after the liberation in 1945. The later political development did not, however, favour this idea. In the process of democratisation of the social life after 1968 there were new constant negotiations, nevertheless only after 17 November 1989 Silesian University was established eventually. At first the Academic Senate of the Masaryk University in Brno passed the resolution of 17 September 1990 establishing the Faculty of Philosophy in Opava and the School of Business Administration in Karviná. The Law of the Czech National Council of 9 July 1991 formed these two faculties into Silesian University based in Opava.

Its first Rector, Prof. RNDr. Martin Černohorský, CSc., was designated by the President of the Czech Republic on 1 March 1992. After two-year term of office he was replaced by Prof. RNDr. Demeter Krupka, DrSc. on 1 March 1998. Prof. PhDr. Zdeněk Jirásek, CSc. has been Rector since 1 March 2001. The recent rector in his service since the 1 March 2007 is Doc. PhDr. Rudolf Žáček, Dr.

The new university’s commission has been enhancing people’s education right from the beginning in the region badly marked with coal mining and metallurgical industry. What is specific about this region is its single economic focus and its position near the frontier. On the contrary, one of the positive aspects are inarguably historical and cultural links with neighbouring Poland. These formed a prerequisite for close cooperation between the Silesian University in Opava and Polish institutions of higher education.

The university contributes to social consolidation of the Silesian region and northern Moravia. It plays an important part in the process of forming its intellectual potential. It educates new management in the business and company area, employees in public administration, schools, cultural institutions, banking and other professions.

The Silesian University in Opava is a public (state-funded) university, which became an important centre of education and science of wider region within a short space of time, it gained the interest, good position and respect of the public and it became part of the national community of schools of higher education of university type.

There are three parts of the university, Faculty of Philosophy and Science, Faculty of Public Policy and Mathematical Institute located in Opava. School of Business Administration has its seat in Karviná, Extramural Instruction Centre of Silesian University is situated in Krnov.
