International Conference on Finance and Banking (17th ICFB 2019)

The 17th International Conference on Finance and Banking was held at hotel Mercure in Ostrava on 16–17 October 2019. This scientific event is traditionally organized by the Department of Finance and Accounting at the Silesian University, School of Business Administration in Karviná (Czechia). This year, we welcomed more than 60 guests from the academic, scientific and banking sectors of the Czechia, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Denmark, Turkey, and Russia.

We were honoured to welcome Prof. Evžen Kočenda (Charles University Prague) as a keynote speaker. He gave a speach „Mortgage-Related Bank Penalties and Systemic Risk Among U.S. Banks“. The second keynote lecture („The Valuation Consequences of Spin-Off Restructuring. Are these Transactions still Wealth Creating Strategies?“) was given by Prof. Bruno Sergi (University of Mesina & Harvard University). The third keynote speaker was Tomáš Nidetzký, Vicegovernor of the Czech National Bank.


Furthermore, participants discussed more than 40 presented contributions, focused on various subjects in finance and banking, e.g. financial theory, central banks and monetary policy, banks and banking services, regulation and supervision in financial sector, financial markets, risk management, fiscal policy and public finance, corporate finance and financial management, and financial and monetary integration.


The program also included the City of Karviná Best Paper Award for the best scientific contribution to young researchers under 35 years of age. Papers were judged on their theoretical an technical merit, originality, potential impact on the field, clarity of the written paper, and quality of the oral presentation. The winner was Martin Hodula from VŠB - Technical University of Ostrava with a contribution “Monetary Policy and Shadow Banking: Trapped Between a Rock and a Hard Place”. Adalbert Luczak from European University Viadrina (Germany) won the second place and Marianna Savai from University of Szeged (Hungary) got the third place. The winner receives a money prize 600 EUR and a certificate; up to two runners-up received certificates and gifts. All prizes were announced and handed over during the evening reception on the first conference day. The ceremony was attended also by the Deputy Mayor of the city Karviná Andrzej Bizoń.


Best papers presented on the conference have the opportunity to be published in partner journals Review of Economic Perspectives or  International Journal of Trade and Global Markets (both indexed in Scopus), and Acta Academica Karviniensia.


Finally, we would like to thank all those involved for high quality contributions, fruitful and stimulating discussion, suggestions for scientific and pedagogical cooperation and an amazing atmosphere.
