Choosing the location of the building

Did you know that ... ????????‍♂
the building in which our Faculty was located had been originally the seat of the District Committee of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (OV KSČ)? Its construction began in 1984 and the costs amounted to CSK 60 million. After the fall of the communist regime, a decision was made on how to utilize these premises further. In January 1990, an Open Day was held, and people decided, through a survey (12,412 ballots), to place the newly emerging university in these beautiful premises. The second most preferred choice was the state spa, but it received only 3,246 votes.

Establishment of the university

A new vote was held at the September meeting. During it, 29 members voted in favour, 5 against and 3 abstained. Karviná thus became a university town on September 17, 1990. Assoc. Faculty infrastructure

Did you know that ... ????????‍♂
the Faculty had been initially located in the former headquarters of the Central Committee of the Communist Party? With the growing number of applicants and the need for teaching, the Faculty gradually expanded to other buildings in the area of Karviná. Since 1997, it has taken over the Na Vyhlídce complex, which was built as a secondary vocational mining school in the second half of the 1950s. In 2007, the entire complex was renovated and is still used today. In the years 2003 - 2013, the Faculty also used the building of the former primary school with Polish as the language of instruction on Třída Osvobození. In the period 2008 - 2015, the Faculty took up residence in the building of the former primary school on Žižková St.

Accommodation capacities

Did you know that ... ????????‍♂
at the very beginning, the Faculty had not had its own accommodation capacities? Students from more distant places were accommodated in the Kosmos hostel. The Faculty leased this for a long time from OKD company. Together with accommodation at SOUT in Karviná and the Doubravan hotel building in Orlová, the Faculty had a total of 574 accommodation places available. The Faculty acquired its own accommodation facility only in 1997, in the Na Vyhlídce complex. In the years 2004 - 2007, it also dealt with the increasing demands for accommodation by renting rooms in the Předvoj hostel in Karviná. Extensive reconstruction of the Na Vyhlídce campus in the years 2006 - 2009 increased accommodation capacity and created a quality background for student accommodation. Now the Faculty offers accommodation only at the Na Vyhlídce dormitory, where there is accommodation capacity for 450 students.

Library

Did you know that ... ????????‍♂
at the beginning of the establishment of the Faculty, one room had been reserved for the Library, in which a copier had been located and students could only borrow basic scripts and textbooks? During this period, however, a branch of the Karviná District Library and Study Room was located in the rear wing of the building, which reoriented part of its book collection to the needs of university students. From 1992, the intensive building of the Faculty Library under the leadership of Mgr. Khestlová began. In 1998, the Library was moved to the newly acquired Na Vyhlídce campus, where students could use it until 2007. In that year, an extensive reconstruction of the campus began, and the Library was moved to the premises of the former Polish school on Třída Osvobození for three years. The ceremonial opening of the newly reconstructed Library took place on 15 December 2009. At present, the Library has more than 57,000 books and 42 titles of magazines.

International cooperation

from its inception, the Faculty had been involved in various forms of cooperation with foreign universities and other educational and scientific institutions? Gradually, there was an increasing emphasis on involvement in international programs, research projects and grants. Cooperation with the Peace Corps, the Fulbright Commission and the National Agency for International Education at the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic contributed to establishing contacts with English and American lecturers who then worked at the Faculty, thus involving extensive assistance for the newly established Faculty. From the academic year 1995/96, students were sent to study in Great Britain, Finland, Greece, Ireland, and Austria within the international programs TEMPUS and CEEPUS.
