About the Institute

Our mission is to provide excellent education and research in the field of theoretical and applied computer science, and also in the field of information sciences. Institute of Computer Science have been part of Faculty of Philosophy and Science in Opava since 1998 so we celebrated 20 years of our institute in academic year 2018/2019. We are prepared to continue with excellent and hard work to provide the best experience for our students, community and also society. Our students are often involved to many interesting projects which may be a great start for future career.

Studies

In English

For foreign students we offer a study degree in English – the Master of Computer Science (MSc.). It aims at preparation of fully qualified professionals for design, developement, use and maintenance of advanced ICT products. Topics inclue advanced artificial intelligence and more. The graduates assert themselves as team members of ICT companies focusing on developement, as well as non-profit subjects and administrative institutions implementing e-government.

Bachelor programmes

Master programmes

The aim of three-year Bachelor's degrees is to prepare qualified users and developers across the ICT field. Key topics include computer networking and cybersecurity, ERP and database systems, modern software developement tools and techniques, webdesign, knowledge and expert systems, artificial intelligence and more.

Master degree aims at preparation of fully qualified professionals for design, developement, use and maintenance of advanced ICT products. Topics include advanced artificial intelligence techniques, robotics and drones, computer graphics, process management, supercomputing and more. We offer also master studies in Information sciences.

Research

We focus on (a) Theoretical Computer Science including unconventional and bio-inspired computing (DNA computing, membrane computing - P systems), multi-agent systems and grammar systems; (b) Applied Computer Science: medical image processing, computer vision, robot and drone control and more. We are involved in editorial boards of several scientific journals, in programme committees and organization of many scientific meetings. We organized and chaired, e.g., the world conferences ECAL 2001 (Artificial Intelligence), DNA14 (2008, DNA computing) and CMC15 (2014, Membrane Computing), Workshop of Natural Computing (2020, 2021, ITAT).

Our research staff also participate in the Research Institute IT4Innovations, a partner of the National Supercomputing Center IT4Innovations. This partnership has allowed to create over 100 research results in the areas mentioned above, listed in the Web of Science, Scopus and RIV.

We collaborate worldwide with colleagues, e.g., at the University of Memphis (USA), University of Economics at Bratislava (Slovakia), Vienna University of Technology (Austria), Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Spain), University of Western Ontario (Canada), Bucharest University (Romania), Eötvös Loránd University (Hungary), University of Turku (Finland) and many others.
