The Institute of the Czech Language and Library Science consists of three departments: Department of Literature, Department of Linguistics and Department of Library Science. It provides Secondary School Teacher Training in the Czech Language combined with the study of History, English or German within the Master‘s degree of Secondary School Teacher Training. Furthermore, there is a programme (now coming to an end) of the Czech Language within the programme of Philology, the Bachelor‘s degree of Czech Literature and the Bachelor‘s degree of Library Science (now also combined with other subjects for librarians who want to have a higher qualification). The institute also provides a new study programme Drama Arts.

Graduates find their positions easily, especially those of the programme of Czech Literature, with its wide range of subjects (relation of literature to music, film and visual arts, screenplay, production preparation and edition practice). Such a combination of subjects makes them ideally suited to the positions in editor‘s offices and publishing houses. The graduates of the programme Library Science, in which the students learn wider and practical skills in the field of computer science as well, are also in high demand. Although the Department of Linguistics concentrates on research into spoken language and dialectology, the main attention of the institute is given to the theme „Czech Literature after 1945“. It is worth mentioning that several conferences on this theme have been held here. They were organised by the Institute of the Czech Language and Library Science in Opava together with the Institute of Czech Literature of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and with the Community of Writers. Each year proceedings were published. The Department of Library Science concentrates on the most recent computer technologies.

Besides the co-operation with scholarly institutions and universities in the Czech Republic, the Institute of the Czech Language and Library Science co- -operates with the universities in Slovakia (especially with Matej Bel University Banská Bystrica) and Poland (Opole, Wrocław, Katowice) and also with France (University of Nice Sophia Antipolis).
