Používání elektronických zdrojů podléhá licenčním smlouvám, uzavřeným mezi MÚ nebo univerzitou a jednotlivými poskytovateli přístupu k datům (databázím). Všeobecně lze říci, že pracovníci a hosté ústavu mají právo prohledávat obsah databází, ukládat vybrané dokumenty na disk počítače, z nějž k databázi přistupují, a také je vytisknout v jednom exempláři.
Narušením licenčních smluv může být i některý z následujících postupů:
- předání jakékoliv části obsahu v jakékoliv formě jiné osobě,
- převedení obsahu elektronickou cestou na disk jiného počítače, i kdyby patřil téže osobě,
- stahování obsahu v nepřiměřeném množství, přičemž za nepřiměřené množství může být považováno i jedno úplné číslo (sešit) časopisu,
- odstranění údaje o původci nebo poskytovateli dokumentu, a to i v případě, že je tato informace uváděna jako příloha příslušného dokumentu.
Přesné znění licenčních smluv je k dispozici na jednotlivých serverech. Poskytovatelé si vesměs vyhrazují právo užívání svých databází monitorovat a prokázané zneužití trestat vypovězením smlouvy i jinak.
